UK nationals and their family members will continue to enjoy the right to reside in Malta and move freely in and out of Malta, as well as other associated “free movement” rights as specified in the withdrawal agreement, until 31 December 2020 (ie the end of the “transition period”).
UK nationals and their family members may apply for a 10-year residence document by 30 June 2021. UK nationals and their family members who held a valid Maltese residence document on 1 February 2020 will be contacted by Identity Malta Agency in this regard. The application process will be staggered and there will be no processing fee when applying for the new document. Applicants will need to submit the application in person together with the necessary supporting documents.
Identity Malta has published a list of localities divided into 15 zones and the corresponding submission dates for the new 10-year residence document. Applicants should also be notified by post closer to the date, with exact submission dates.
UK nationals moving to Malta during the transition period should submit an application for residence documents only after a period of 3 months from the date of arrival in Malta, but before 30 June 2021.
UK nationals who are benefitting from status under the Malta Residence Programme Rules or the High Net Worth Individuals Rules should take steps to regulate their position and become beneficiaries under the Malta Global Residence Programme Rules.
