There are six ways you can get Malta Citizenship as highlighted by the Maltese Citizenship Act [CAP.188]

  1. Citizenship by Birth – Born in Malta from one Maltese parent
  2. Citizenship by Descent – Born outside Malta from one Maltese parent
  3. Citizenship by Marriage – Married to a Maltese national
  4. Citizenship by Adoption – Adopted by Maltese parents
  5. Citizenship by Residency – Foreign citizens living in Malta for a period of five years
  6. Citizenship by Investment – Invest in the Malta Individual Investor Program (MIIP)

Malta Citizenship Act[Cap.188]

Malta Citizenship by Birth

The Citizenship Act, states that for a person to claim citizenship by being born in Malta must either have:

a) One parent who is a citizen of Malta
b) Have one parent who meets the criteria for a person referred to in article 44 (4) (a) or (b) of the Constitution

In this case, the person applying for citizenship must provide proof of their Maltese descendants.

Malta Citizenship by Decent

The Citizenship Act, states that for a person to claim citizenship by being born outside of Malta must either have one parent who is a citizen of Malta.

In this case, the person applying for citizenship must provide proof of their Maltese descendants.

Citizenship by Marriage

“Any person who on or after the appointed day marries a person who is or becomes a citizen of Malta shall be entitled, upon making an application in such manner as may be prescribed and upon taking the oath of allegiance, to be registered as a citizen of Malta.”
However, the person applying for the citizenship must submit proof that they have been living with and is married to a Maltese national for at least five years.

Citizenship by Adoption

Maltese citizens who adopt a child from other countries can request the authorities to grant that child citizenship if they are under the age of ten at the date of the adoption.

Malta Citizenship by Residency

A person is eligible to apply for Maltese Citizenship by Residency if, prior to your application, you have resided in Malta for a period of five years. You must also, have adequate knowledge of the Maltese or the English language and be a person of good character and standing with no criminal record.

Citizenship by Residency, most importantly, is at the discretion of the Minister. They will decide whether you meet the criteria and if they want to grant citizenship.

Malta Citizenship by Investment

Malta Citizenship by Investment (also known as the Malta Individual Investor Program) awards the investor, and any family members on the application, citizenship for life that can be passed onto future generations. With Malta Citizenship, the applicant and family members will receive a Malta passport, and all the benefits it brings, and a certificate of naturalisation.

However, the Malta Individual Investor Program (MIIP) is a very exclusive scheme that only awards citizenship to those who pass not only intense due diligence tests, but also those who can bring a positive investment to Malta.

  • Be at least 18 years of age as well as have no criminal record and be a person of good standing
  • Make a contribution of €650,000 to the National Development and Social Fund
  • Invest €150,000 in local stock or bonds approved by the Government. (must be held for five years)
  • Purchase a property for at least €350,000 or rent a property for at least €16,000 per annum. (must be kept for five years)
  • Be covered by a global health insurance policy
