Malta Fantasy Sports exempt from license requirements
Continuing its policy to further improve Malta’s position as a world leading hub for the Remote Gaming industry, the Maltese authorities have published the Fantasy Sports (Exemption) Regulations. By virtue of the said regulations, fantasy sports are deemed exempt from the requirement to obtain a license in terms of the Maltese Lotteries and Other Games Act.
The regulations define Fantasy Sports and Fantary Sports Games as “a contest played for money or money’s worth whereby the winning outcome is determined predominantly through the skill or knowledge of the player, and where the results are determined by the accumulation of statistical results of the performance of a number of individuals in sporting events”. The definition excludes forecasts of scores, point spreads or any other future occurrence of one or multiple events.
Fantasy Sports is a fast growing industry and with the new regulations Malta is well placed to host the companies offering the service.
