Key Employee Initiative – Malta residence programme
Malta is becoming a more attractive country to non-EU nationals owing to special tax status Malta residence programmes. Identity Malta has launched a new Malta residence programme called the “The Key Employee Initiative” (KEI) which provides a smoother and more efficient service to highly-qualified Third-Country Nationals who wish to work in Malta. The programme will simply ease the issuing of work/residence permits to prospective key employees within five working days from the date of submission of the application.
Who is eligible to apply under the KEI?
The residency programme is applicable to individuals who are in managerial or highly-technical positions within a company. As an accredited agent by Identity Malta, Thomas Jacobsen can assist you filing your application. The main conditions of the Key Employee Initiative are as follows:
• Annual gross salary of at least €30,000 per annum;
• Certified copies of the relevant qualifications, warrants or the necessary work experience;
• Declaration by the employer stating that the applicant has the necessary credentials to perform the duties being assigned.
Interestingly, the Key Employee Initiative residence programme is also permitted for innovators and entrepreneurs involved in start-up projects that are endorsed by Malta Enterprise making it a viable option for Malta company registration.
What is the procedure under the KEI?
Applications for a single permit under “The Key Employee Initiative” (KEI) may be submitted either if the applicant is in Malta or still abroad. If all conditions are met, then the main applicant will be issued with a residence permit which is valid for one year. In addition, the residence permit can also be renewed for a maximum period of three years.
